“Creativity is allowing yourself to make mistakes.

Art is knowing which ones to keep.”

–Piet Mondrian

Middle School Art 2008-2009

Art class is one day a week for the year.

GRADES 3-8 ARE REQUIRED TO HAVE A SKETCHBOOK.

AVAILABLE AT THE SCHOOL STORE FOR $2.00

I am thrilled to begin my third year as your child’s art teacher. The ceramics kiln will be up and running this year! We will also host another Kid’s Art Fair this spring.

 Curriculum

This year the art curriculum will focus on cultural themes that explore the fine art, and sometimes music, dance and food associated with various parts of the world. I am most excited about our unit on the Pacific Islands where we will explore the dance traditions and art history of Samoa! We will continue to learn the basic elements and principles of design while creating drawings, sculptures, collage assemblages, paintings, digital photography and more.  Each cultural unit will be infused with the work of artists, including masters as well as modern artists working in our own community. Your student will learn how to “see” as an artist and develop a new language to speak about art.

Grading

Yes, it is possible to objectively grade art! I will attach a rubric to most projects your child completes that clearly outlines the learning objectives for the project. Occasionally, there will be homework.

Projects               70%

Homework         15%

Sketchbook       15%

 The Sketchbook will be graded!

All Middle School students must have and bring their sketchbook to every art class!

 Core Values

The art studio will support and follow the core values set forth by St. Stephen’s School. Our projects and discussions will promote critical thinking, and help students reach their highest potential academically, spiritually and socially. Our class will foster an environment of integrity and respect. We will promote one another to be researchers instead of spectators. Together we will deepen our roots in our Catholic identity by applying Catholic beliefs, morals & values to behavior in the studio.
