Elect This is a non-competitive course that inspires students to perform at a level of their personal best in all areas of athletics. Students are provided opportunities to develop physical fitness, healthy living techniques, and increase their knowledge/skills in order to perform athletics and field sports. The P.E. department follows the
Diocese of St. Petersburg for both Health and Physical Education. The curriculum is further designed to build upon the Body-Space-Effort-Relationship (B-S-E-R) movement framework that is taught at the early entry level (pre-k). By using this framework as a guide it re-enforces those activities/skills taught within the three major development levels of Physical Education. Level I activities focus on pre-K thru 2nd grade. Level II activities are appropriate for 3rd thru 5th grade. Level III shifts toward specialized skills and sports activities for 6th thru 8th grade. Less emphasis is placed on movement concept activities at this level and more on manipulative play. Cooperative play rules are also taught and a great deal of emphasis is placed on this concept for all students. In addition, sports lead-up games are introduced to help enhance the quality of the lessons for real life like situations.
The instructional parts of each lesson plan include:
Fitness Development Activity: allows time to
properly learn stretches, do strength training and cardio fitness. (10 minutes)
Instruction:
allows time to give water break and provide guidance of what to do
(5 minutes)
Skill development & practice: focus’ on the particular unit of instruction /sport activity being taught. (20 minutes)
Game Activity: allows for games to be used for practicing those skills emphasized in the above lesson activity. ( 10 minutes)
Selection of the lessons mirrors the seasonal competitive sports program that the school follows within the Brandon Christian Athletic League.
Classes are conducted twice a week for each class.
The 3rd thru 8th grade classes participate each year in the Presidents Physical Fitness Program.
Testing begins in the fall when the weather is cooler.
The mileage club is a
fitness program that allows the students to participate in during
their lunch recess. They can walk, run, or do both every
Monday thru Thursday. The class with the most miles each month
will win a treat. Students are eligible to receive toe tokens
for every 5 miles, a food certificate from Beef O' Brady's for miles
10, 30, 50, 70, and 90 miles. They will receive a certificate
from the school for the miles 20, 40, 60, 80, and 100.
The electives sports class follows the same guidelines already mentioned with the exception of the scheduled format described above. It is structured so that the physical activities played will go into more depth and correlate to the previous weeks lesson plan.
Kindergarten to Eighth grade:
The students can look forward to developing the following skills throughout the 2007-08 school year:
KINDERGARTEN TO SECOND GRADE: Cooperative learning, sportsmanship, fine motor skills, rhythm, jump rope, directional skills, spatial awareness, general fitness, throwing, catching, kicking, dribbling, and lastly organizational games. Health topics will consist of good health habits, learning good character traits, how to say NO, exploring different feeling, and basic life skills.
THIRD TO FIFTH GRADE: Cooperative learning, types of throws, catching, fitness, sportsmanship, and specific sports skills. Health topics will consist of introducing life skills, how to be physically fit, and general safety issues.
SIXTH TO EIGHTH GRADE: Sportsmanship, fundamental skills, lead up games to team sports, life-time fitness and health related topics. Health topics will consist of learning about drug & disease prevention, personal health & safety issues, growth & nutrition and lastly, how to deal with mental/emotional/social health.
Due to some changes in the schools curriculum the middle school students will only meet once a week for P.E., it is extremely important that the student not miss dressing out for that class.
The routine will consist of prayer, joke for the day, warm-up, stretching, instruction, application of skill, and game/activity. The grading will reflect the students effort in 1) participation (all are expected to do the best they can) 50% of grade, 2) dressing out (all are required to be in full P.E. attire: shirt, shorts, shoes) 30% of grade, and 3) tests/quizzes (a few of the tests will be conducted orally & by observation) 20% of the grade.
Any child not able to participate must have an excused note from parents or doctor in order to be excused for that lesson. Also, any child who misses dressing out more than 3 times will receive a detention & parents will be notified.
A list of the rules and expectations will be handed out on the first day of class, please review with your child what they can expect.
It is very important and highly recommended that each student have a water bottle, sunscreen and hat with them when outside for P.E. The sun can be very damaging to the skin if not protected properly.
I look forward to another great year and give many thanks for your continued support. Please feel free to contact me with any concerns, questions or problems that you might have, 741-9203 ext.
